The Mexican government sent humanitarian aid to the Cambray II neighborhood of the Santa Catarina Pinula municipality in Guatemala, following orders issued by President Enrique Peña Nieto. The region was affected by a landslide on Oct. 1.

Mexican officials also ordered the National Civil Protection Department to organize the support mission and rescue teams in Guatemala.

A total of 12 units from the National Defense Secretariat will participate in the mission, alongside 11 units from the Armed-Navy Secretariat, 32 federal police units, one representative of the Foreign Relations Secretariat (SRE) and 8 National Civil Protection Department units.

Moreover, 16 canine units provided by the Armed-Navy Secretariat and the federal police will also work on the relief effort.

The Embassy of Mexico managed and coordinated the mission alongside the Guatemalan authorities, in order to help workers have free and easy access to the scene of the disaster.

The Mexican rescue workers will be received by the Mexican Ambassador to Guatemala Mabel Gómez Oliver as well as representatives from Guatemala’s Foreign Affairs Ministry and National Coordination for Disaster Prevention.

Mexico has a tradition for providing help to those countries who require relief from natural disasters.

An official from the Interior Secretariat National Disaster Prevention Center (Cenapred) said that Peña Nieto issued the order to help Guatemala emerge from the crisis as soon as possible.
