New method to detect the chikungunya virus is available in Mexico

The National Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (Indre) released the latest method for detecting the chikungunya virus Monday, enabling the State Public Health Laboratory (LESP) to detect the disease in less than 72 hours, without having to send the tests away for confirmation, said the Colima Social Health and Welfare Secretariat.

The new tests allow health workers and researchers to get results more quickly in order to provide opportune treatment and compile epidemiological information in order to take actions to benefit the population.

The new method was developed by Indre through quality control trials and the RT-qPCR real-time detection method. Indre then provided the new guidelines to the LESP so Colima can more effectively combat the potentially deadly virus which is carried and transmitted by mosquitos.

Indre called on the LESP to utilize the method in order to maintain epidemiological vigilance in the fight against the chikungunya virus at a state level, empowering the lab to publish its own results in accordance with the nationally mandated method.

Beginning Monday, the new tests carried out in state labs will be monitored by national external evaluation panels. The state labs will be required to send tests to the Indre headquarters for the national serum library and comply with the evaluation panels, as indicated by current guidelines.

In addition to improving health care and combatting the virus, the new method will improve the diagnostic capability of the Colima LESP, the State Health Secretariat said.
