It has been confirmed that the king and queen of Spain will visit Mexico on their first travel to the American continent as monarchs of the Spanish Crown.

Zacatecas and Mexico City will be their only two destinations in our country.

King Felipe VI and his wife Queen Letizia will be in Mexico City June 30 and in Zacatecas on July 1.

The governor of Zacatecas, Miguel Alonso Reyes said Zacatecas is a rich state where conservation efforts have preserved the magnificent heritage of their ancestors. He congratulated the state administration for its development efforts, in all aspects, which have made of Zacatecas a national example.

He said that in recognition to its history, architectural patrimony; due to the fact it has been a national example in economic, social and cultural development in recent years, and as part of the excellent relationship between the state and federal government, it was determined that the kings of Spain will visit Zacatecas.

Zacatecas is part a World Heritage Site” the governor stated.

It has a net of cultural festivals through the year and a notable growth in tourism, which makes it one of Mexico’s most important cultural destinations” he continued.

Alonso Reyes declared that King Juan Carlos de Borbón and Queen Sofía once visited the city of Oaxaca to witness the world renown festival of “La Guelaguetza”; and now King Felipe VI and his wife Queen Letizia are visiting Zacatecas, due to its strong links with Spain.

Zacatecas has its origins as a Spanish mining state in the 16th century. Due to its mineral richness, it quickly became one of the most important cities in “New Spain” (which was Mexico’s official name for more than 200 years).

Alonso Reyes said that an example of the enormous historical presence Zacatecas had in shaping “New Spain” was that the Spanish Crown attained enormous wealth through the Zacatecas silver during the colonial era.
