PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Q. Roo.- Conditions and legal framework, are being prepared so this year  the municipality of Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen) can have its first “Smoke Free Beach”.

This was disclosed by the project leader of the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (COFEPRIS) Elizabeth Martinez Corral, who reports that this health delimitation would be on the coastal area known as the Founders Park Beach (or Caribbean beach).

It is estimated that the perimeter will cover 400 square meters and this could be fulfilled for the holiday period, by the end of this year.

“We have much work to do throughout the year to achieve this and it will require the support of all merchants and restaurateurs around us to carry out the program of “100% free from smoke beach” said Martinez Corral.

This would be the second beach in Quintana Roo, after ‘San Martin’ in Cozumel since October two years ago,  to be declared with this feature. This distinction is backed by international organizations like the United Nations Organization, the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization

Elizabeth Martinez Corral from the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (COFEPRIS), also mentioned that in Playa del Carmen they are trying to have more public parks and recreation centers to also gain that certification of “smoke free spaces” and explained that since the decree of “General Control Act of Tobacco” in 2008, more than 35 buildings have been ‘cleaned’ from smoke, both in the private sector and in the public such as  offices, schools etc.
