The Federal Police and the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) took control of Tierra Caliente and Acapulco, Guerrero on Wednesday, said the National Security Commissioner, Monte Alejandro Rubido.
While detailing the special security operative for this region, Rubido said that the operation will include a specialized kidnapping unit and a special prosecutor under the federal Attorney General’s Office.
By orders from President Enrique Peña Nieto, the federal forces will take control of Acapulco to ensure safety for vacationers, Rubido said.
The operative will cover 22 municipalities in the state of Guerrero, eight in the State of Mexico, two in Michoacán and four in Morelos, said the commissioner.
The Federal Police and the Mexican Army will assume the role of the municipal security, he said.
This operative was enacted by Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong in order to re-establish peace in the region and push its development.
In order to do this, federal forces in the region must be increased and actions against criminal activity must be enforced, said Osorio Chong.
“Actions will be reinforced to face the crimes that harm society the most and free transit of communication channels will be protected,” he said.
“We are doing this so that shortly the inhabitants of Tierra Caliente will be able to carry out their daily lives without violence,” added Osorio Chong.
The peace of mind of Mexican families must be ensured and the rule of law in each municipality must be implemented in the country, he said.
These are tasks to be addressed, ones that don’t encourage divisions, but rather encourage a joint effort, said the interior secretary.
