The White City Ball is coming up on Saturday, October 18 from 8 pm to midnight at magnificent Villa Verde Mérida on Calle 56 x 55 y 53, Colonia Centro. This is the second year for the Ball, which supports the local craft movement in the Yucatan. We interviewed event organizer, Cindy Allison, to see how this year will be different than last year.
“For a first time event, I think everyone was really happy with it, but we realized there were things we could do better” replied Cindy Holman Allison. “This year, we didn’t try and do it all ourselves, but reachedout to the restaurant and catering community for help with the food. The response was wonderful, there are so many offering to help that I know we will have enough food.”
Those supplying food include Hennessy’s, Trattoria La Pasta, Bistro Cultural, Merida Home Cooking to Go, V’s Good Eats and Café Crème. Sweets from the Bull Pen and Yury’s Decadent Brownies will end thenight on a sweet note. Malta Gastropub will be in the back garden grilling up mini hamburgers. Shulteln, anew gourmet ice cream company, will be serving up scoops in the front courtyard.
“Last year, the cash bar only served beer and wine” continued Cindy. “But we realized that many people like a mixed drink or sipping tequila, so this year they will also be available. People will even be able to buy a bottle of wine, so they don’t have to keep going up to the bar.”
The event raises money for AANY, AC. which is dedicated to promoting quality art in the Yucatan and enabling artists to be able to live off of their artistic endeavors. Many expats are familiar with the AANY Arte A Mano show which will be held on November 14, 15 and 16. This year, many of the AANY artists areparticipating in the Ball by offering their work for the silent auction. Massages, gift certificates, an overnight stay at Hacienda San Jose Pochul and other items will be part of the auction.
“The theme is the White City Ball. With white flowers, linens and even the pool filled with white balloons and most everyone dressed in white, the evening was just magical” exclaimed Cindy. That theme will be the same this year and with all the improvements, this Ball will be one that people remember for a long time.”
Tickets are available online at www.aany.org and in Centro at Hennessy’s, Bistro Cultural and the Merida English Library. At the beach, tickets are available at Lizard Joe’s in Chelem. For those coming from out oftown, several area inns and B&B’s are offering discounts for the night of the Ball. For more information on the Ball and participating inns visit www.aany.org.
