Calcehtok is one of the largest cave systems in Mexico, and is the largest in the state of Yucatan.  It has not yet been fully explored, with many tunnels yet to be investigated.
To reach this magical place, take the Mérida-Campeche highway southwest for about 50 kilometers, until you reach the exit labeled “Maxcanú”.  Follow the exit until you see the cave site sign (about 1 kilometer). Keep going straight ahead and you will find the entrance to the caves.

The caves are open all year round and the tour guides are locals; in fact, the tour guides are all relatives of the person who discovered the caves. Four different tours are available:
• Family Tour:  A walk into the caves. (Duration: 1½ hours, cost $ 250 per group)
• Basic Intermediate; hiking and climbing, a little kneeling and crawling. (Duration: 2 hours, cost $ 350 per group)
• Advanced Intermediate; hiking, climbing, some kneeling and crawling. (Duration: 2 ½ -3 hours, $ 400 per group)
• Expert Tour; hiking, rope climbing, crawling for about an hour to get through narrow spaces.  (Duration: 5 hours)

A minimum of physical effort is required for the Family and Basic Intermediate tours, but visitors should be aware that at some locations in the tour they will experience total darkness, and may have to traverse some tight spaces, so it is not recommended for people with claustrophobic tendencies.

Once inside the cave, you will be impressed by the number of birds flying around, and as you descend into the cave system, you will feel your body react to the reduced pressure and temperature.

As you explore the caves you will see the intricate paths made by the locals, going deep into the cave.  The guide will also tell you stories about “The Aluxes” that live inside the cave, and if you take the Expert Tour, you will be able to see the altar that was built in their honor.
