With nearly 100 kilos of sea cucumber in his possession, a neighbor of Chicxulub Puerto was arrested in the beach area known as “La Caleta” at around 5 am on Sunday July 20th.
The incident occurred when agents of the Municipal Preventive Police were conducting a routine inspection in La Caleta, and noticed an old model Chrysler Spirit passing by.  The officers asked the driver, identified as V.G.K.B, a 29-year-old man, to stop and verify his documentation.
With obvious nervousness, the man said he had no documentation, so the agents asked him to step out of the vehicle so they could conduct an inspection.

100 Kilos of Sea Cucumber found in Trunk of Car

The police officers found several black plastic bags in the car’s trunk, which contained a large quantity of precooked sea cucumber.  The individual was arrested and consigned to the PGR in the city of Merida for the federal crime of harvesting of banned species.
There are approximately 1,250 varieties of ocean-dwelling sea cucumber; all are considered vital to the ocean food chain, being both predators and prey.  One of the sea cucumber’s most fearsome predators is a land-based creature: homo sapiens.  Human beings in many parts of the world, particularly Asia and increasingly in places like Yucatan, Mexico, covet the sea cucumber as a prized product they can commercialize.  As a result, sea cucumbers have been harvested to the point where they are now endangered.
