The amount of HIV infected individuals in Playa del Carmen, way above the national average

It is estimated that between 6 and 10 thousand people living in Playa del Carmen , Quintana Roo, are infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV -AIDS ) , although most of them do not even know it” , declared the President of the “Vida Positiva Playa” Civil Association, Rudolf Geers.

According to figures registered  by “Vida Positiva Playa”,  each inhabitant of Playa del Carmen has three sexual partners in average, situation that increases the number of existing HIV carriers.

Besides, most of the population in this city, is between 20 and 30 years old, which makes them more sexually active. It is estimated that for every person aware of being a carrier of the virus, there are between 10 and 20 who do not know they are infected.

According to statistics from the National Center for the Prevention and Control of HIV / AIDS ( Censida ) in Quintana Roo, 72% of HIV carriers are detected at an advanced stage.

Playa del Carmen is one of the cities in Mexico with the highest incidence. “Tests show that between 2 and 3 % of the local population has HIV, while according to Censida the national average in any other city is 0.3 %,” Geers said.

In Playa del Carmen two people with HIV – AIDS die every month on average, sometimes three. In May 2014, we already have two deaths , a 22  year old man died at the IMSS and another 26 year old died in the General Hospital, this the number of HIV related deceases known to the association, but there may be more ,” concluded Rudolf Geers, President of the “Vida Positiva Playa” Civil Association.
