Shooting in Yucatán: two dead and five wounded

On Saturday May 3rd, Yucatan reported red alert when the Municipal Police of Yaxcabá and the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) were ambushed in the village of Unión Libre, with a result of two dead, including a State Police and five wounded agents.

The Municipality of Yaxcabá is located 90 kilometres (55 miles) Southeast of the city of Merida, in the central region of the Peninsula, right on the State line with Quintana Roo.

The incident started when five men were arrested for disorderly conduct and participating in a fight during a party in the village of Libre Union, Yaxcabá, Yucatán.

While they were taken to a detention facility by Municipal Officers, relatives of the detainees opened fire against the vehicle in an attempt to rescue them. At that moment, agents of the SSP arrived on scene, starting a shootout, in which state police agent Bernardo Aké Yeh, 59 years old, was killed, with a shot to the head.

Afterwards, the two attackers went into the shrubberies, where the police started an operation by land and air to find them. At the end, one of the suspects was arrested and Antonio Jimenez Tepate, was killed while exchanging fire with the State Police.

The three injured SSP agents were taken by helicopter to the T-1 IMSS Hospital in Mérida, their condition is reported as stable. The other two officers of the Yaxcabá Municipal Police, were transferred badly injured to a hospital in Valladolid, Yucatán.

After this situation in Libre Unión, Yaxcabá, Yucatán, security was tightened throughout the state and numerous roadblocks were installed in the main highways and secondary roads.
