On Friday May 23rd, on the eve of the city-wide celebration known as Noche Blanca, SoHo Galleries is hosting Noche de Colores, an exhibition to introduce new works by two emerging artists from Mexico City, Jorge Aguilar and Federico Rivero. Aguilar paints big, bold masterpieces on wood and canvas, in contrast to the quiet understatement of Rivero’s bronze sculptures.

The event, which begins at 7:00 pm on Friday evening, will feature Aguilar creating a painting “live and in real time,” after which, starting at approximately 9:00 pm, the work will be auctioned with all proceeds going to Brazos Abiertos.

Born in 1987, Aguilar studied Art History at Casa Lamm Cultural Center, and Engraving, Painting and Drawing at the Academy of San Carlos UNAM. He has had several individual exhibitions in Mexico City, and has participated in group exhibitions throughout Mexico and at the Museum of Bratislava, Slovakia and Vienna in Austria. This will be his first exhibition in Merida.

Also from Mexico City, Federico Rivero (b. 1972) has participated in eight group shows, including a permanent exhibition at Galeria Arte al Sur in Acapulco. Working in bronze and marble, Rivero creates pieces of quiet elegance, a fitting contrast to Aguilar’s bold strokes.

Adding to the variety of styles and techniques, Alison Palmer’s playful papier mache masks round out this show’s eclectic collection.
