Authorities of State Health Services (SSY) warned of the presence in the state of the spider known as the black widow, which bite can be fatal to humans if not attended in time. Potentially its bite could cause a heart attack, due to its paralysing effect.

Darli Ortiz Martínez, head of the Zoonis department in the SSY, reported that this poisonous insect has been found in Tzucacab,  Xmatkuil and some neighbourhoods in Mérida.

The are 99 arachnids in the State of Yucatán, but they are not toxic to humans. In the case of the black widow habitat, it is usually located in Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Sonora, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Morelos and some parts of Campeche and Quintana Roo.

So far there have not been reported cases of people bitten by this bug or deaths related to this animal. However, the SSY has antidotes in case of emergency due a black widow´s bite.

Usually black widow lives in rocky areas, dark places and moist. “these animals are not found in houses oftenly.”  Ortíz Martínez said.

Ortíz Martínez declared that the first time they knew about the presence of this spider was in 2007, when researchers from UADY made the discovery in a ranch in Tzucacab. Later specimens of this arachnid were found in Xmatkuil and Mérida.

No one knows for sure how the bug came to Yucatan, but it is believed that it have been accidentally introduced by visitors, since it is almost impossible that they have migrated because they can not travel long distances by themselves.

In case you get bitten by this or any other kind of spider, it is important to go to a health center as soon as possible to receive the proper treatment. Some people are more vulnerable to spider venom, and depending of your metabolism, it can cause different allergic reactions.
