11 tons of solid waste are collected in the East of Mérida to be recycled

Mérida, Yucatán, May 15, 2014 – . Despite the rainy weather, 400 residents of the Miraflores neighbourhood located in the East side of Mérida exchanged a total of 11.7 tons of solid waste for food and other basic items, as part of the 33rd edition of the program known as “Recicla por tu bienestar” (Recycling for your Welfare).

The neighbours were able to collect 4,480 alkaline batteries, 1,451 used tires, and 152 liters of used cooking oil; this was exchanged for 19,899 welfare bonds (Bonos de bienestar).

“There was an increase in the number of  scales in the weighing are, in order to expedite the flow of users” said the head of the Ministry of Social Development (SEDESOL), Nerio Torres Asilah.

“To support the confidence of participating families, we adopted measures that provide favorable conditions for the development of this strategy and its benefits,” the official declared.

The State Official emphasized that there has been an uptake of 449.5 tons of recyclable materials so far in 2014, managing to benefit 16,564 people from 24 neighborhoods in the South of Mérida and 9 Municipalities of the State of Yucatán.

The next phase of the “Recicla por tu bienestar” program was held on Saturday May 17, simultaneously operating in the main parks of the neighbourhoods of Chichi Suarez and Sitpach.
