Semana Santa vacation period starts today

On Friday April 11th, 2014, State Governor, Rolando Zapata Bello and Secretary of Public Safety, Luis Felipe Saiden, leaded the kick off ceremony of the holiday public safety operation (Operativo Vacacional de Seguridad) at the Army theme park (Parque Conmemorativo del Centenario del Ejército Mexicano) located in Colonia Manuel Crescencio Rejon, in the South of Merida.

In this operation to ensure public safety during the holiday Easter period (Semana Santa), more than 7,000 law enforcement agents are involved, and they will be conducting surveillance on patrol cars, boats and helicopters.

On the other hand, the commissioner of the Federal Police (PF) in Yucatan, Hugo Ignacio Tinoco Gutiérrez said that more than 100 Federal Police Officers will participate as part of an operating team that will be collaborating with State and Municipal Police, divided into specific areas.

70,000 visitors are expected in Merida

The International Airport of Merida “Manuel Crescencio Rejon” awaits the arrival of 70,000 visitors during the holiday Easter period, an increase of 30% in the number of passengers received regularly.

Director of Regional Airports (ASUR), Hector Navarrete Muñoz said that they have high expectations for this holiday season. He explained that in the days of offseason moves the airport about 3,200 passengers per day, but during Semana Santa, the average rises to 4,500 passengers on week days and 5,000 on weekends.

Navarrete Muñoz added that for this holiday season the Merida Airport has expanded its transactions and security services, and asked the airlines to use larger aircrafts to transport a larger number of passengers.

At this time, we can say that at least 80% of the visitors are of national origin, and they keep arriving everyday during the 2 week holiday period.

Attention to visitors and guided tourists in Downtown Merida

During this holiday season (Between April 12 and 24) there will be a free of charge tour service through the Downtown area, available to all tourists who register at the information booths located at Palacio Municipal or Paseo de Montejo, for groups of maximum 25 people. The guided tours begin at 9:30am and concludes at 11:00 am; and at night from 7 to 8:30pm.
