It was published in the “Diario Oficial de la Federación” the agreement that establishes an overall number of 357 tons of sea cucumber, during the season that goes from last Tuesday until the 14th of this month , but only in the communities of Sisal and Celestún.

“La Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y Alimentación” (Sagarpa), through “la Comisión Nacional de Acuacultura y Pesca” (Conapesca)
published yesterday the agreement in order to modify the closure period and set a quota for the exploitation of sea cucumber in specific coastal marine areas of the state of Yucatán.

According to the federal agency the sea cucumber is a resource of considerable importance to the fishermen of the state of Yucatan due to its high commercial value  derived from the great demand of the product by the Asian markets, which encourages the interest from Yucatan´s fishermen.

Therefore , this measure opens a window of opportunity to perform this activity under a responsible and sustainable fishing system. Focusing on the preservation of this species and the benefits in social, economic and biological terms.

This provision of the Federal Government is given in a framework of participation and consensus among producers, Conapesca , the National Fisheries Institute and the Government of the State of Yucatan.

Since 2013 an agreement was made with the fisherman of Celestún and Sisal to determine the feasibility on the sea cucumber exploitation in this coastal region.

In a survey conducted in February 2014, Inapesca (National Fishing Institute) determined that the sea cucumber population showed a significant increase in density in Sisal and Celestun. Therefore, the institute recommended not to commercialize more than 6% of the exisistant biomass of this species.
