Costco, the internationally famous store for retailers of brands names and products, from computers and clothing to gardening and gourmet food; bought the land right next to Plaza Galerías Mérida, that used to be  owned by the company “Tejidos de Henequén” and will open a new store in this location in the North part of the city .

The project seems to be part of a plan for that area of four hectares (as big as Plaza Galerías), in which the American based club price shop would be the anchor store surrounded by smaller new businesses that this high value urban area demands.

Nearly a hundred workers are laboring on the dismantling of the former henequen fabric factory , because the acquiring firm “urges” to finish the demolition of the old building as soon as possible.

The land extension bought by Costco is right next to the Plaza Galerías. According to information from Diario de Yucatán, investors refused to pay for the steel beams from the old industrial building, so it had to be sold as scrap. This  precious high quality material was brought from Europe decades ago to build up the factory.

The  old 10 warehouses will soon disappear as the demolition goes on at fast pace.
