Despite several efforts to decrease the consumption of narcotics and the numerous busts made in the city of Mérida and in the state of Yucatan, the proliferation of these little “Narcotienditas” (narcotic stores), is a sad reality, also the access to many drugs is becoming easier to people of all ages as these stores continue to operate.

The “Narcotienditas” operate 24/7, and the state government calculates that there are from 400 to 500 of these stores in Merida and other cities of the state.

However these “businesses” are not the only places where hundreds (of people can obtain drugs. According to some students and young people that have sought the help of the “Centro de Integración Juvenil de Yucatán” (Juvenile Rehabilitation Center of Yucatan),  it is not difficult to buy drugs outside some schools, bars, adult entertainment places and “Clandestinos” (Clandestine places where people go to buy alcoholic beverages after midnight, and now drugs).

“One of the factors that pose the most risk today is the availability and easy access that our teenagers and young people have to acquire any kind of substance, ” said Víctor Muñoz Roa director of the Juvenile Rehabilitation Center of Yucatan
