Progreso Mayor Daniel Zacarías met on Thursday March 6th with the local Canadian Community at Progreso City Hall, to discuss about several issues, such as, garbage collection, security services and strategies to prevent coastal erosion.

The Mayor, expressed his commitment to work equally for all the inhabitants of the port, which includes all foreigners who reside in this Municipality, those who live in the beach area permanently, but also the “Snowbirds”, who spend approximately six months of the year in Yucatan and six months in Canada.

Several members of the Canadian community expressed their concern about how much the sea has taken over the beach, increasing the coastal erosion.

The Mayor emphasized that he will seek for solutions with the State Government to prevent coastal erosion and to increase the cleaning of roads that lead to the beaches.

Canadians also noted that in many paths leading to the beach there is garbage left by the families that visit the port, causing outbreaks of infection and proliferation of stray dogs.
