On Tuesday March 18th, about 250 Canadian residents attended the Farewell Party organized by José Francisco Lara Arjona, owner of the known restaurant “Barlovento”, which in recent years has become a meeting point for foreign retirees.

From 1 pm, the preparations began, including the partial closure of Calle 80 in Progreso, where tables and sunshades were set up for the celebration. The attendance sang and clapped cheerfully, and acclaimed those who were given awards for different categories.

The awards, called ” Montor awards ” for the name of the host of the event, Raul Montor, included:

  • Best pet category: “Cassandra” the dog
  • Most charismatic couple: Claudio and Petra
  • Best dancer: Marie Alice
  • The “chicuelos” (youngsters) of the year: Dave and Johnny
  • Most frequent customer:Wayne
  • Most demanding costumer: John
  • Hottest chick: Jeanny
  • Most “propineros” (best tipping customers): John and Marie
  • Revelation couple: Stan and Cray

A recognition was also given to the Director of Tax Collection and Sports, Ana Cecilia Rodriguez Meza, for the support given to the event.

Peter and Lili Wilson, who were the king and queen of the Canadian community in the recent Progreso Carnival, received a special mention and they lead the party farewell dance.

Jose Francisco Lara, owner of  “Barlovento” said that right now only  80% of the more than seven thousand “Snow birds” remain in the area of Progreso, Chicxulub and Chelem; as we know, these people come to Yucatán to spend the winter season. In the coming days only 30% will stay, and gradually only the  year-round residents will remain in the beach areas.
