On March 14, 15, 16 and 17 2014, the St. Paddy’s Fest will take place at Hennessy’s Irish Pub, to conmemorate the Traditional Irish Holiday of Saint Patrcik’s Day.

This Festival is important to both Mexicans and Irish, since back in 1846, the “Batallón de San Patricio” (Saint Patrick’s Batallion), from Ireland, collaborated with the Mexican Army in the war against the United States.

The event will take place at the entrance of Hennessy’s Irish Pub, Friday and Saturday from 7 pm to 12 am. And Sunday and Monday the activities will start at 2 pm.

This will be the first Saint Patrick’s Irish Festival ever to be celebrated in the city of Merida, and it will be organized by Hennessy’s Irish Pub and Heineken, with support from the Merida City Hall and Patronato del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de Mérida.

The main event will be the performance of Aebh Kelly, Irish soprano from Skerries in north County Dublin, two times winner of Ireland’s National Singing Contest. In July 2012, Aebh was invited to sing for thePresident of Ireland Michael D. Higgins at a garden party.

Other musical groups will perform, and rare musical instruments from Ireland such as the Bodhran, Uillean Pipes and the Irish Harp will delight the audience.

During the festival there will be games, contests and gifts for the attendants. A “Tug of War” competition will take place with a match between México and Ireland versus Rest of the World.

Irish tipical dishes will be served such as Sheppard´s Pie, Bangers and Mash or Irish Stew among many other Celtic gastronomic specialties. All attendants must wear green in order to be part of the celebration (One of the reasons that one wears green on St. Patrick’s Day is because the Catholic side of Ireland is identified with green, but there are other theories like the color of the shamrock, the green grass fields of Ireland, etc.).

The press conference was presided by:

Sean Hennessy owner and manager of Hennessy’s Irish Pub, who spoke in perfect Spanish during the press conference and answered the questions of the press.

In representation of Mayor Renán Barrera, Fernando Felipe Gutiérrez Cervera,  City Hall Institutional Development Subdirector (Subdirector de Desarrollo Institucional del Ayuntamiento de Mérida); who underlined the similarities between the people of México and the people of Ireland.

José Ponce de León, representative of Heineken Mexico.

In representation of the “Patronato del Centro Histórico” Emilio Moller Bernés, journalist, radio personality and television show host, well known for his “Primera Plana” TV Show.
