The First Volaris flight Monterrey – Merida – Monterrey arrived yesterday at the Merida International Airport with 103 passengers, this new route will directly link the capital cities of the Mexican States of Nuevo Leon and Yucatan.

The Airbus A-320-174 was welcomed by the Ministry of Tourism Development with trova music, snacks, wine, and hostesses dressed in Yucatecan traditional clothing. The welcome ceremony was led by undersecretary of the Innovation and Tourism Development Ministry, Carlos Manuel Joaquín González.

The regional director of Asur Group, Héctor Navarrete Muñoz described the new route as a major boost for tourism in Yucatan and thanked the company Volaris for keeping its word, because one year ago Volaris announced they were considering the creation of this route and yesterday it finally became a reality.

Navarrete Muñoz said during his speech that according to information from the New York Stock Exchange, Merida Airport increased by 19% the number of passengers arriving by plane to the city, and the number of seats increased from 140,000 to 172,000, which means a growth of 23 % according to a comparison with the same period of last year.

“Many people ask for greater international connectivity. And the answer is yes, we want it, but we need more service and better connectivity with the North and the West of our own nation first” said Navarrete Muñoz. “Asur trusts in the tourism development of Yucatan.”

The Commercial Director of Volaris, Miguel Rodriguez Aguiñiga said “Yucatán has always given preference to our company and therefore we have created routes such as Merida – Mexico City, Merida – Guadalajara, and now Merida – Monterrey. We are proud to provide more air connectivity to this great city.” “Our point to point connection model offers prices so competitive, that they are even less expensive than bus tickets, we have unique promotions with discounts up to 70 % (when booking a ticket 10 months in advance), and reimbursement of one thousand pesos if the flight arrives very late or if your luggage does not arrive.”

Aguiñiga Rodriguez announced that the Merida to Monterrey one way ticket price is only $499 pesos (if you book 10 months in advance) and has a regular price of $ 899 pesos (which is still very inexpensive).

The flights out of Mérida to Monterrey will depart on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1:55 pm and from Monterrey to Merida will leave at 11:30 am on the same days. Volaris has a young fleet of 46 Airbus aircraft, 105 routes and 2,606 employees.

The State Secretary of SEFOTUR, Saul Ancona Salazar said the new route will increase the flow of tourists and business between Nuevo León and Yucatán. This will result in more passengers, better economic exchange, and more productive dynamics between these two states.

In 2013 the Merida International Airport had the highest level of air traffic in the last 10 years, it surpassed 1,300,000 passengers. But there is still much to be done, since our airport currently handles only eight destinations, three international and five domestic, working with 8 airlines and performing 107 to 110 daily operations.
