Héctor Navarrete Muñoz General Director of ASUR (Aeropuertos del Sureste) unveiled yesterday the project to create a Flight Distribution Center in the Air Terminal in Merida. Which will allow tourists, specially Americans to fly directly from their hometown to Merida.

Besides, he stated that it is very important to have a better aerial connections with other national and international destinations.

Weve worked very hard with the team looking to promote Merida as a route for its geographical strategic position to attend the Mexican Southeast “ said Navarrete Muñoz.

In this regard, he said it is important to have an immediate connection with direct flights from Veracruz to Merida, since by now the connectios with that state are done through Villahermosa, Tabasco.

These agreements will allow the opening of new air routes linking Mérida with other regions, in order to transform the Mérida International Airport in some kind of a “Hub” for Southeast Mexico, and have a better connectivity with the rest of the country.

The airlines are looking to do business and destinations are now attracting people, there are Mexican airlines like Interjet that are buying more planes, because the growth of the tourist destinations demands a larger number of aircrafts” he said.

Navarrete Muñoz added that the city of Merida has connectivity to Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara and Villahermosa, with two airlines flying to each one of these cities, but more planes and more flights are needed.

2013 has been the best year for Mérida in number of flights, but airlines and governmental touristic authorities need to continue to work together on issues related to connectivity between destinations” he said.

Moreover, Navarrete Muñoz considered that the long weekends have been successful and have also generated a greater mobility of domestic tourists to Southeast Mexico, particularly benefiting airlines, buses and hotels.

The official said that these holidays have provided families with the opportunity to organize their trips in advance and plan their vacations more carefully. The next big holiday is “Semana Santa” (Easter Week) that is coming in two weeks.
