The local president of the National Chamber of the Restaurant Industry, (Canirac) Álvaro Mimenza Aguiar, declared that the restaurant industry is happy with the Carnival change of venue because during this year’s edition, there were good sales at Xmatkuil. And for the first time in many years, restaurants on Paseo de Montejo were able to open their doors during the days of Carnival.

Firmly Mimenza Aguiar said that Carnival must stay in the Xmatkuil Fairgrounds because this facility has the proper conditions for massive celebrations.

“The change was successful and positive,” he said. “And an affluence of 500,000 to 600,000 people is a very positive result for the first edition of the Carnival at Xmatkuil”. “Now, the City needs to work on better logistics and contents to make it a great Carnival,” he continued.

What should be improved?

“The parade is something that needs a lot of improvement,” he said. “We need to look up for the trends in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, we can not compare to them because they have special samba schools, but companies that promote their brands can improve the quality and the image of their floats.”

Mimenza Aguiar said that there are other variables that need to be worked on in order to improve the Carnival, and the board will meet shortly with City officials to give their feedback and make suggestions.

“I consider that, if we do a good job, Merida Carnival will become a national tourism attraction in 5 or 7 years, and could be among the largest in the country.”

“As I said before, restaurant owners in Paseo de Montejo were happy because for the first time in many years they could open their businesses. Whatever they sold was gain, because they used to close during Carnival.”

Finally, Mimenza Aguiar, concluded saying that 200 direct jobs were generated and there was an economic spill of $2 to $3 million pesos. There was a better and more hygienic food and beverage control, and the restroom facilities provide a cleaner and safer environment to the attendants.
