Armed Theft Robbery In The Heart Of Merida

On the afternoon of Tuesday March 11, a single man, armed with a handgun stole over 30,000 pesos in jewelry and cash in a jewelry store in the heart of downtown Merida.

The subject threaten, Rosalia Romo, Marcela Martinez and José Matias three employees that work in “Joyeria Colonial” located in Calle 60 between 61 and 63.

According with the following investigations, the assailant walked over one of the employees demanding the money and then ordered the three to go to the restroom.

Among the things that were stolen there are gold and silver jewelry and also cash, the entire loot was estimated to be a little over 30,000 pesos. Unfortunately for the owners of the store the assailant escaped, but authorities have one suspect, as one of the employees assures to know the thief.

Eyewitnesses said to the authorities that they saw the subject go out, “as if nothing had happened” and to later disappear after entering the cathedral located a few steps of the establishment.

Municipal police arrived at the place shortly after and started the search on nearby streets, but were unable to locate the thief.  The State attorney´s office interrogated the employees of the store to discard the involvement with the robber.
