On February 6th at approximately 5 PM, church bells started ringing alerting the residents of Isla Holbox to a fire.

Villa Flamingos, a popular beach front hotel was burning. The response was quick, golf carts loaded with locals, tourists, pumps, ladders and buckets arriving on scene. The palapa roofs were flaring and sending sparks threatening neighboring buildings.

With heroic effort the fire was contained and extinguished in just over three hours. There were no injuries. Guests of the hotel were quickly found rooms in other hotels; severalguests lost most of their possessions.
