This is the first of a series of this man’s opinion of local restaurants. It is not meant to be a review, there are no stars given, just an opinion.

The Naked Frog

I ‘ve been spending a lot of time lately working in Progreso. I must admit that here I had the best omelet  in the last five months I have been in The Yucatan. I was constantly told I could get the best hamburgers, french fries, and fish and chips in Progreso too, at The Naked Frog. I did not move here for American, or English food, I enjoy the cuisine of the Yucatan, and of Mexico. But knowing there are many others who ask me for guidance on dining out, I needed to try.

Walking to The Naked Frog, I saw a striking blonde running towards an open air tourist bus, grabbing the microphone from the guide, telling the tourists, they have the best fish and chips, hamburgers, and coconut shrimp. And “if what you want is not on the menu, just ask, and we will make it for you!” What she did not tell them, when you order, you get a generous shot of tequila too.

Walking to the restaurant, I found out the outgoing blonde was one of the owners, Marsha.

Marsha greeted me warmly as soon as I stepped into the Naked Frog, and made sure I had a good table in the shade. She greeted everyone like we were in her home, warmly, and full of hospitality.

Marsha was my waitress too, and I was served a hamburger, pasta salad, and fish and chips. I was told the pasta salad was not on the menu, but in this man’s opinion, it should be. The pasta was rotille, cooked al dente, with fresh tomatoes, onion and other vegetables, tossed in a light oil.

Next came the burger. The roll was lightly toasted, and was piled with hand cut pieces of real cheese, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato. The burger was hand formed, and plump. There was “catsup” (as they call ketcup in Yucatan), on the side. First bite reminded me what real beef tastes like, a bold flavor accented with Worcestershire sauce. I knew there was much more food to come, but I did not leave a crumb.

I finished my water and the fish and chips arrrived. The chips (french fries) were hand cut just before cooking, They were crisp, with a firm fully cooked interior. And the fish, well, in Progreso, it goes without saying was fresh. I did not ask what type it was, but it was remarkably similar to cod. The batter held to the fish, and there was minimal grease. The fish and chips dish was served with home made tarter sauce. The only thing that was missing was malt vinegar, which I was assured by Marsha will be served next time I reutrn.

I topped off the meal, by surprise with a wonderful cup of black coffee. I was happy to find it was Bodega 65, by far the best coffee I have had here in the Yucatan. The Naked Frog also sells the coffee poured over a coffee soaked roasted marshmellow, which melts into a creamy yummy hot beverage.
