Yucatan started 2014 with one positive case of influenza A/H1N1

22 probable cases influenza A/H1N1 were sent for analysis in the State of Yucatan between the 1st to 11th of January, according to records from the National Center for Epidemiological Surveillance and Disease Control (Centro Nacional de Vigilancia Epidemiológica y Control de Enfermedades).

Out of the 22, there was only one positive case of influenza A/H1N1, according to the General Direction of Epidemiology (Dirección General de Epidemiología), this represents a 25% decrease in the number of cases occurred during the same period of time on 2013.

However, health officials have emphasized the need for preventive measures to combat the high number of acute respiratory infections, the citizenship needs to be aware that the winter season has not yet concluded.

The Coordinator of Prevention and Health Care of the IMSS Yucatán, Alonso Sansores Río, said it is important to wear warm clothing, and try not to stay outdoors during the mornings and evenings, especially children under five and elder people.

“Children under five and the elderly are the most vulnerable individuals to drastic changes in temperature, so it is necessary to take specific measures,” Sansores Rio concluded.
