The Mérida Carnival is a popular party created for the joy and fun of the Yucatecans, that has been celebrated each year since the XIX century in the city of Mérida.

For most people the Merida Carnival is a family holiday, and for the last 40 years citizens have been attending the Paseo de Montejo to relax and enjoy the festivities.

In 2014 though, the Municipality is introducing a new concept called “Plaza Carnaval” on the fairgrounds of Xmatkuil, the new home of the Mérida Carnival that will host this traditional celebration.

Mayor, Renan Barrera Concha stated that the site will be divided in five zones with specific activities according to age and preferences:

  • La Fiesta de la Fantasía (The Fantasy Party)
  • La Bomba (The Bomb)
  • Festival de Culturas (Cultures Festival)
  • El Reventón (The Wild Party)
  • La Guitarra Loca (Crazy Guitar)

The fireworks will announce the beginning of the parade, and as usual, the floats and musical groups will be the highlight of the Carnival.

The carnival will be held from February 26 to March 5 with following schedule:

Tuesday and Sunday from 10:00am to 10:00pm, (Parade: 1:00pm).
Friday, Saturday and Monday from 4:00pm to 01:00am, (Parade: 7:00pm).

The “burning of bad humor” and the “funeral of Juan Carnaval” celebrations will be held in the main square of the city as a symbolic act, featuring  a fireworks show. This ceremony, involving the king and queen of the Carnival, officially kicks off the festivities on February 26 at 8:00pm.

One of the main features that will differentiate this from previous carnivals, is that there will be specific areas for people who want to drink alcoholic beverages, and those looking for fun without alcohol.

The alcohol free area will offer activities for those who want to have a quality time with their families, including rides, bounce houses, skateboarding exhibitions, a nightclub, arts and crafts / painting, sculpture, other visual arts and more. There will be 25 different activities everyday for the audience entertainment.

Finally, Major Barrera Concha declared that those people who attend the Carnival in costume will enjoy special privileges.
