Merida Fest 2014 starts Sunday January 5
With more than a hundred activities, the Municipality of Merida presents the “Merida Fest 2014″ that will feature literature, visual arts, dance, theater and cinema exhibitions, shows and workshops in different venues across the “Ciudad Blanca”, from January 5th to January 31st in order to celebrate the 472 Anniversary of the City and the 15 Anniversary of the Olimpo Cultural Center.
At a press conference at the Olimpo, Mayor Renan Barrera Concha declared that the Municipal Direction of Culture has the permission to prepare and offer a high quality, innovative and efficient Festival that will make us remember our cultural traditions.
The Festival will start on January 5th, offering diverse samples of different Countries with the participation of one hundred artists.
Renan Barrera, mentioned that the festival marks a very important moment in the new cultural phase of the Municipality, which is comprehensive, inclusive, transparent, and innovative.
He also anticipated that in January, the first stone of the Municipal Dance Center will be set, as well as the creation of “The Night of Cultures”, a new cultural option for the citizenship of the Yucatecan capital.
“The Night of Cultures” will include three weekends that will highlight the Monuments and Buildings of our Historical Downtown with Mayan, Chinese, Korean, African and Portuguese cultural performances.
At the press conference, it was also announced that the Mérida Fest will include acknowledgments to Yucatecan artists such as, the sculptors Humberto Peraza, Fernando Castro Pacheco and Fernando Ponce Garcia among other figures like late actor Hector Herrera “Cholo”, Juan García Ponce and for the first time there will be an international tribute to South African leader Nelson Mandela.
There will also be local groups premieres , new theater productions, as well as dance , circus and music. Seven companies will show their new and original work, where more than two million pesos were invested in the production of local artists work.
The Mérida Fest 2014 will also have gastronomic events involving popular chefs , including Aquiles Chavez, as well as the opening of the first diploma in “Management and Marketing of Arts”, “1st Cultural Management Seminar”, among others, that will feature conferencists from Mexico, Ecuador, Spain and Colombia.
The Museum of the City will provide the exhibition ” The Surreal Eye “, a collection of sketchings and aquatints of Max Ernest , Renee Magritte, Henry Moore and George Visat.
The Fest program was unveiled two days ago, including the performance of internationally renowned artists such as Mexican tenor Fernando de la Mora, Portuguese Cristina Branco, the Spanish Concha Buika and the international musical group Sonora Santanera, among others.
There will also be a full program of literature, visual arts, workshops, dance, theater and cinema.
Activities will take place in different venues along Merida’s Historical Downtown, all the events will be free admission.
