Looking to modernize the Yucatecan Railways

The railroad union leader, Ernesto Sonda Castro, said that one of the main challenges for 2014 will be to obtain private investment in railways and trains, so Yucatan would not have to rely only on a large project, such as the Transpeninsular Train Project.

“For the next year, we will continue with the project of the Transpeninsular Train, we are confident that the tender by Communications and Transportation Secretary (Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes, SCT), will be issued soon, as it was determined by President Enrique Peña Nieto.” said the leader.

He said that he expected that during 2014 another tender will be made, but aimed at a private company interested in investing in the railroad sector as a mean of modern transportation for the State of Yucatan.

The Communications and Transport Secretary, Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, reported that in the first trimester of 2014, calls will be published for the construction and rolling material of the Transpeninsular Train Merida – Playa del Carmen Project.

Ruiz Esparza also directed his message to the 15 national and foreign builders of railway rolling material, which presented their passenger train projects as part of the 13 presidential commitments, in charge of the Communications and Transportation Secretariat, through the Railways and Multimodal General Direction (Dirección General de Transporte Ferroviario y Multimodal), led by Pablo Suárez Coello.

Ruiz Esparza also reported that the adjudication process will be made with absolute adherence to the corresponding Mexican regulations.

Meanwhile in Yucatán, Sonda Castro said that, “The train must be seen as a first world mean of transportation, otherwise we will not be able to provide the same level of service as in Europe, where trains reach speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour, and are a much cheaper mean of transportation than traveling by plane.”

Previously Sonda Castro explained: “The company Chiapas – Mayab left the tender open, so now the possibility for other companies to invest in the railway transportation industry is being analyzed and with this we intend to stop being a burden for the Federal Government with which we currently have a tender with Isthmus of Tehuantepec Railway (Ferrocarril Istmo de Tehuantepec).”

“The current maintenance service and actions are insufficient, for example every mile of railroad has 2,200 railway sleepers, and we provide maintenance to a stretch of 10 to 15 miles each year, which is not enough to reach a first world level of service” he said.

Ernesto Sonda concluded explaining that the railroad, once installed , creates lower operating costs than an airplane.
