It’s Chile Outside… But the competition is heating up. The Merida English Library Chile Cook- Off is just two days away!

This is the thirteenth annual Merida English Language Chile Cook- Off, I was told by the head of the Cook- Off  Catherine Harrison. The MEL (Short for Merida English Library) declared that “The Cook Off” is the biggest fund raising event of the year. MEL is a Mexican Non Profit Corporation, and is completely self funded through memberships, and events like Home and Garden Tours, and the Chile Cookoff.

The Chile Cook-Off is a great Sunday Event for the entire family. There are between 30 and 35 contestants this year, each bringing 26 quarts of what they hope is prize winning chile. There will also be beer, water and sodas available. Every entrance ticket (150 pesos adult, and 50 pesos for child) also entitles you to a free hotdog and soda, so no one will go home hungry.

Catherine told me the planning of the Chile Cook- Off starts as soon as the event is over for the following year, but it is a full time effort that started in July.

Tickets are still available at the Merida English Library.

About MEL, in their own words:

Our Mission Statement

“The Merida English Library (MEL) is a not-for-profit organization offering a variety of cultural, educational, informational and social programs, services and events to the English-speaking community in the Yucatán, irrespective of their level of English language proficiency.  The cornerstone of MEL is a lending library that provides English-language material in all formats normally available from a traditional library.”

This year, there will be six winners total in two categories, People’s Choice, and Judges Choice. It is not too late to enter the contest, and tickets are still available to the event.
