This week only from Wednesday the 22nd until Sunday the 26th of January 2014, the Hacienda Kancabchén, which is a beautiful colonial-style hacienda located just 15 minutes away from the city of Mérida, will be hosting the celebration of its 25th anniversary with an extense “Charreada” event that will last for 5 days.

Charreria is considered the national sport of México and it can be described as a competitive event similar to rodeo and was developed from animal husbandry practices used on the haciendas in  different regions of Mexico. The sport has been described as “living history,” or as an art form drawn from the demands of working life. Evolving from the traditions brought from Spain in the 16th century, the first charreadas were ranch work competitions between haciendas. The modern Charreada developed after the Mexican Revolution when charro traditions were disappearing. The competing charros often come from families with a tradition of Charreria.

Also during the charreada we can appreciate the performance of the escaramuzas, this type of competition involves women’s teams dressed in a style reminiscent of the nineteenth century, participating in choreographed patterns on horseback.

The Hacienda Kancabchén will be hosting several charreadas throughout this weekend, where everyone is invited to be a part of the celebration.

During the event you will find food, beverages, self-guided tours through the stables, quality breathed horses, music by local bands, stores where you can find traditional garments, a great atmosphere and so much more to enjoy a wonderful and unforgetable experience!

The Hacienda is located at km. 22 Carretera Mérida-Motul, detour to Tixcuncheil, Baca, Yucatán.

ABOUT HACIENDA KANCABCHEN

Mr. Pascual Rivero Gamboa built the Hacienda Kancabchen (pozo de tierra roja – well of red soil) in 1921, it is located just 15 minutes from the colonial city of Merid,a in the state of the Yucatan.
This beautiful colonial-style hacienda was created with the target to engage in farming and the production of sisal (the plant of henequen), but due to the gradual disappearance of the industry of sisal, Mr. Rivero Gamboa inherited the property to his daughter, Mrs. Josefina Gamboa Casares, who had owned until 1985.  From that date on, the Hacienda was enabled as a dairy farm and a place for recreation and relaxation.
