The Social Inclusion Unit (UUIS) of the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY), located in the colony San Jose Tecoh in the south part of Merida, has reported a high percentage of diabetic people.

This preliminary result was derived from a study performed by academics and students from the Faculties of Nursing, Chemistry, Medicine, and Dentistry from the Center of Biomedical Sciences Unit“, Dr. Hideyo Noguchi of the UADY, stated.

“During the last 6 months we have surveyed 3,500 people living in two sectors, comprising of about 20 blocks, and we have detected a high number of people that suffer from diabetes and lack of medical control, or they do not know they have this disease,” said Julia Candila Celis, technical coordinator of UUIS of the UADY.

“We still do not have the precise numbers and statistics but there are reports of large numbers of people with this problem,” Candila Celis continued.

The investigation is intended to create groups for control and support for people with diabetes.

The program will continue for at least six more months.
