Forced Payment of Tips or Minimum Consumption is Illegal
Requiring payment of a predetermined tip amount on a bill and/or requiring a minimum consumption amount are the two principal abuses committed by restaurants during the summer vacation.
Eduardo Pacheco Gonzalez, delegate of Profeco, assured that during summer vacation they are watching the hotels and restaurants to avoid abuse to consumers.
The delegate informed that the principal complaint is requiring payment of a predetermined tip amount, for which he reminded the public that paying a tip is not an obligation.
Pacheco Gonzalez stated that the restaurants and hotels must have all charges exhibited of their products or services, displayed as a total amount that includes taxes.
During the summer, a travelling module is functioning during the summer in Progreso for citizens to denounce any who are not complying with the law. Consumers can also make formal complaints at the offices of Profeco Monday thru Friday from 8:30am to 3:00pm.
