Foreigners and Yucatecans commemorate “International Earth Day”

Canadians, Americans and Yucatecans has been encouraging and promoting the conservation and care of the natural environment for four years through a civil association call “Merida Verde”.

This association has more than 400 members (65% Mexicans and 35% foreigners), it was founded in 2008 by a group of “extranjeros” that had decided to leave their countries to live in this city. The main purpose is “to encourage the preservation of the planet” as Luis Novelo Castro, member of the comity of Merida Verde, explained.

Novelo Castro commented that every year Merida Verde has convoked and get more and more people involve. “We had 300 people in our very first event, last year 1000 were present in the celebration of the International Earth Day, this year our goal is to get involve more than 2000 people”.

The association had several activities during this day, conferences, workshops, rock and jazz band performance, puppets shows and presentation from others association and companies that work on promoting and producing organic products.

  1. It was great to read about our activity in the Yucatan Times. It was, however, Earth Day, not Day of the Hearth.
    Also, the third person in the photo was Carolina Ruiz,the key organizer of our Fair.
